Word Study

In 1-305, we use the Fundations program to teach word study.

  • We are currently working on glued sounds.
  • Students are also writing sentences using their sight words and what they have learned about digraphs.

Glued sounds (or welded sounds) : Two or three letters glued together- changing the vowel sound.

Glued sounds starting with a

Glued sounds ending in -ng

Remember to label the glued sounds by drawing a box around them:

Digraphs: Two letters are combined to make one sound.

Remember to label the digraphs by underlining them:

sh-

th-

ck-

Bonus Letters: Before adding a bonus letter, think of the following...

1. Does it have a short vowel sound?

2. Does it end in F, L, S or Z?

3. Does it have 1 syllable?

IF YES... THEN ADD A BONUS LETTER!

Remember to label the bonus letters by drawing a star above the bonus letter:

CVC Words: Three letter words that are made of a consonant-vowel-consonant.

Tapping: Remember to make the sound of each letter as you tap your fingers.

Then, put the sounds together!

Practice: Tap the sounds of the word. Then, say the whole word.
