Literacy

At PS 112, our comprehensive early childhood literacy program is designed to build strong, confident readers and writers through a balanced and structured approach. Each day, students engage in a dedicated 120-minute literacy block that integrates reading, writing, phonics, and small group instruction. During this time, children participate in meaningful, standards-based learning experiences that support the development of foundational skills as well as deeper comprehension and critical thinking.

Our instruction is grounded in high-quality curricula, including HMH Into Reading for core literacy instruction and the Wilson Fundations program to support systematic and explicit phonics development. These programs work together to ensure that students build strong decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills.

Teachers use assessment data regularly to inform instruction, allowing them to design targeted, intentional lessons that meet the diverse needs of all learners. Small group instruction is a key component of our literacy block, providing opportunities for differentiated support, enrichment, and individualized attention.

Our literacy program is further strengthened by the support of an instructional literacy coach, Andrea Lopez, who works closely with teachers to plan, model, and refine effective instructional practices. In addition, our literacy specialists provide targeted interventions, working with students on specific skills and strategies to build a stronger reading foundation and enhance comprehension.

PS 112 is also proud to offer the Reading Recovery program. This highly effective, short-term early intervention is designed for first-grade students who are experiencing difficulty with reading and writing. Through individualized instruction, Reading Recovery aims to accelerate student progress and help children reach the average level of their peers, setting them on a path toward long-term literacy success.
