Studio in a School

PS112 is fortunate to partner with the highly respected Studio in a School program, bringing talented teaching artists into our K–2 classrooms year-round. Through this residency model, students experience sustained, hands-on visual arts instruction led by professional artists who guide them through the creative process from exploration to finished work. Instruction is rooted in inquiry and discovery, encouraging children to observe closely, ask questions, and express their ideas using a wide range of materials and techniques.

Students are introduced to both contemporary and historic artists, with a strong emphasis on NYC-based artists and cultural influences that reflect the rich diversity of our city. Lessons are designed to build art literacy as students learn how artists think, create, and communicate meaning through their work. In addition to developing technical skills, students strengthen creativity, confidence, and critical thinking as they experiment with different mediums and artistic styles.

Our partnership with Studio in a School also provides meaningful opportunities for student artwork to be celebrated beyond the classroom. Many of our young artists have had their work showcased in professional settings, including exhibitions at Christie's in Midtown Manhattan, offering them a powerful early connection to the broader art world. Through this program, students at PS112 not only learn about art—they experience themselves as artists.
