Math

At PS112, mathematics instruction begins in 3K and continues to build across each grade level, developing strong foundational skills and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Students grow into confident problem solvers and flexible thinkers as they explore big ideas such as counting, addition, subtraction, place value, fractions, and more.

Our core math curriculum, Envisions, provides a comprehensive and engaging framework that supports conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world application. To further enrich instruction, we incorporate the supplemental program Context for Learning, which emphasizes problem-based learning and encourages students to think critically, make connections, and explain their reasoning.

Instruction is grounded in the five Mathematical Practices outlined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), supporting students in making sense of problems, reasoning abstractly, constructing arguments, modeling with mathematics, and using tools strategically. Through daily opportunities for discourse and collaboration, students are encouraged to share their thinking, listen to others, and develop multiple strategies for solving problems.

This work is supported by our dedicated Instructional Math Coach, Irma Colon, who partners with teachers to strengthen instruction, model best practices, and ensure that all students have access to high-quality, engaging math experiences.

Our students love exploring mathematics through hands-on learning and play-based experiences that make learning both meaningful and engaging. Each Friday, we celebrate Math Fun Fridays, where students participate in interactive games and activities designed to reinforce and apply the skills they have learned throughout the week. Families are an important part of our learning community, and parents are invited to join us for Math Fun Fridays on the last Friday of every month, creating joyful opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate mathematics together.
